Many times, the students and I use manipulatives during these lessons. In many of the subjects, I promote independent and collaborative work ethics. Students participate in educational activities such as word games, math games, spelling choices, partner work, and projects which builds individual and group stamina.
One of the primary focuses in the 1st grade level is developing their reading skills. We participate in The Daily 5 Reading Program, which has proven to be extremely successful in teaching students how to read independently, interactively, listen to fluent reading, and strengthen writing skills using different strategies.Students even learn how to coach and assist fellow classmates in reading. They also learn how to choose appropriate books for their reading level, which instills confidence in each student.
While academics are an imperative part of the education process, 1stgrade also focuses on the importance of cooperatively participating in school and developming socially and emotionally. We focus on self-control, positive social interaction, problem-solving skills, organization, respect, responsibility, and accountability. By the end of the school year, students are able to read fluently, write complete sentences on their own, work individually and collaboratively, and solve conflicts – along with many other valuable skills that can be applied to real life scenarios. 1st grade serves as the foundation for preparing students for the proceeding grade levels.
