Recommended books from ALSC
Notable Children’s Books– Current list Each year the Notable Children’s Books Committee selects the best of the best in children’s books. These books are of commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (birth through age 14) that reflect and encourage children’s interests in exemplary ways.
Building a Home Library – Four bibliographies created by the ALA-Children’s Book Council (CBC) Joint Committee, with cooperation from ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee to provide guidance to parents, grandparents, and others interested in assembling a high-quality library for their children at home.
Summer Favorites reading list – National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) – ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee worked with NEH to update this reading list, which has been offered since 1998. More than 90 new titles appear on the updated list, which is arranged by grade level and offers more than 230 titles selected for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Nature-focused books for children – This list was created by the Quicklists Consulting Committee for the American Camp Association’s Explore 30 Camp Reading program.
Tween Award Book List – The 2011-2012 School Age Programs and Services Committee compiled this list of the 2012 ALSC award winners that are suitable for tweens, ages 10-14.
Great Early Elementary Reads – The ALSC 2011-2012 School-Age Programs and Services Committee recommends these titles for children who are just learning to read and beginning to read on their own. The books included were published between 2009 and 2011. However, many are part of a larger series that young readers will also enjoy.
